Tower of London (Tower
Hill)
If the walls of the Tower of London, commonly
referred to as 'The Tower', could talk, they would
tell stories of torment, execution and intrigue.
It is the most popular tourist site in London.
Lords, Dukes, Princes and rulers saw fate played
out here, and the engraved plaques relate many
of the personal details of their lives. It's a
fascinating history brought to life in this miniature
city of exaggerated towers. Though no ruler since
Henry the VIII has called it home, The Tower is
still a royal place. Its history dates to nearly
1000 years ago. At the time it was completed in
1097, it was thought to be the tallest building
in London. The moat is visible from the main entrance.
Once a fetid, stagnant pool, the moat was drained
in 1843 upon the Duke of Wellington's order. Today,
a small raven graveyard in the grassed-over channel
holds mementos for some of the old birds.
Don't miss the view of the entire Tower of London
from the battlements. Wander on you own, or join
an excellent tour. They begin every 30 minutes,
departing from the Middle Tower, and are free
and information-packed.
